Founded under the vision of Maharaja Ranbir Singh, the Institute grew as a living centre for Sanskrit learning within the Shri Raghunath Temple complex, Jammu. The present e-library project carries that responsibility forward by organising rare manuscripts into a searchable, subject-wise digital collection.

Historical Context & Royal Vision

The vision of Maharaja Ranbir Singh

The collection was established during the reign of Maharaja Ranbir Singh, a visionary Dogra ruler dedicated to education, Sanskrit learning and cultural preservation. The mission was to collect, restore, translate and preserve classical texts from across the Indian subcontinent.

Situated in Jammu, the Institute became a bridge between the scholarly traditions of Kashmir, Punjab and wider centres of Sanskrit learning. It also encouraged translation efforts into Hindi and Dogri so that classical knowledge could reach a wider audience.

Sharada Script Collection

Safeguarding Kashmir's sacred script

Sharada is one of the historic scripts of Kashmir and was used for centuries to record philosophical, ritual and scientific knowledge. As fewer scholars today can read traditional Sharada manuscripts, the Institute's role as a custodian of this endangered script tradition is especially important.

The project supports careful preservation against brittle paper decay, ink fading, pest damage and environmental stress. Historical descriptive catalogues by scholars such as M. Aurel Stein and later Indologists provide a foundation for modern metadata-driven access.

High-resolution digital access allows global scholars, students and readers to discover manuscripts through searchable categories, secure ebook delivery and a structured customer account.
